Non-trained vendor employees can negatively impact patient safety and may cause the vendor to be removed from the hospital project.
What's the advantage of trained contractor employees?
This course introduces vendor employees to the many unique aspects of working in healthcare facilities. Without competency trained vendor employees, hospitals stand a real chance of failing an accreditation survey if they cannot show documentation evidencing that all outsourced contractor employees have completed such competency training.

When I take the course tests, can I go back to the course for help on questions?
No, the course access is blocked after a user starts a test. Our suggestion is for all Users to take detailed notes when going through a course. Those notes are very helpful when taking the tests.

What happens when a user fails a course Test?
When a user fails a test, the user can retake the Test 2 more times. If the user fails to pass the test in those additional opportunities, the user must re-enroll in the course.

Once I enroll in a course, is there a time limit to complete that course?
No. However, after no activity for 45-Days by the user, the user’s account becomes “Inactive”. If the user tries to access the course, and is informed that the account is “Inactive”, the user must contact [email protected] and request the account be reactivated.

Jack Rutledge
Course Creator
Before founding National Healthcare ED, Jack was the owner and President of Rutledge Environmental, a healthcare vendor for 24 years that worked in 10+ States and served 100+ hospitals. During that same timeframe, he was the Chapter Administrator and Conference Chairman for the Kentucky Society of Healthcare Engineers for 15 years. It was during his tenure with KSHE that Jack addressed a glaring weakness in available training for healthcare contractor employees. He assembled a team of presenters for training programs for those employees that included a hospital Director of Facilities, an Infection Preventionist, a hospital Security Director, and a Risk Manager. These training programs were conducted several times each year, 2005-2015, until Jack moved out of Kentucky after selling Rutledge Environmental. The idea of that training was what led to him to create National Healthcare ED and the online Priority One Series of Courses for Healthcare Contractor Employees.
Gary Slack
Technical Advisor
Gary spent 35+ years as a consultant to engineering and regulatory management for healthcare facilities across the Country. During that time he was a sought-after speaker by Hospital Associations and State Healthcare Engineering Societies. He was also an author, or was technical contributor, of five (5) books regarding healthcare physical environment topics; served on national technical committees, such as the National Fire Protection Association and the Healthcare Safety Institute. Then, when The Joint Commission, the largest hospital accreditation company in the USA, decided to add Life Safety Code Surveyors to their Survey Teams, they contracted with Gary to train the first class of those surveyors. Since Gary’s retirement as a healthcare consultant he has served as the Technical Advisor for National Healthcare ED.
